Too Much of a Good Thing
“O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.”
Psalm 34:8
I love spaghetti! I realize that it is not considered fine cuisine, but I am happy with simple fare. My wife’s family recipe for spaghetti is unrivalled in my opinion, and I have no problem eating it weekly. It is simply that good. As much as I have enjoyed spaghetti over the years, you can have too much of a good thing.
While I was travelling through California with a male quartet, we were served spaghetti for a week straight. That is right, every night we went to a different church, and every night we were served spaghetti. I am sure that this was not premeditated, as they were all independent Baptist churches that were not in close proximity to one another. We all enjoyed the first meal, the second, not so much, and by the end of the week our stomachs literally rolled as we sat down for our gastronomical delight. We felt bad as we told those friendly church ladies that one helping was enough, but we had had enough of a good thing for a good while.
The same cannot be said for the goodness of God. Our God specializes in good things for our body and spirit that we all really need each day. He will not withhold any good thing from those who live righteously. Psalm 84:11 We can never get too much of the meat of the Word. “How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” Psalm 119:103. We are reminded in Hebrews 6:4-5 that we “have tasted of the heavenly gift...and have tasted the good word of God”. God’s gracious gift and wonderful Word should be things we never tire of or take for granted. We all “have tasted that the Lord is gracious.” I Peter 2:3. This week, remember to thank God that He is good all the time!
